چکیده

The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the application of high-resolution imagery and geographic-based information systems across every segment of society from security intelligence to product marketing to scientifi c research. Google Earth has positioned itself at the forefront of this spatial information wave by providing free access to high-resolution imagery through a simple, user-friendly interface. Whereas Google Earth imagery has been widely exploited across the earth sciences for spatial visualization, education, and place-based searches, few studies have utilized the highresolution imagery to yield quantitative insights about the processes and mechanisms acting at the earth’s surface. In this paper, we detail the benefi ts of the underlying high-resolution imagery available within Google Earth, review the limited published research to date, and utilize this imagery to quantitatively illuminate previously diffi cult and unresolved questions within the discipline of geomorphology involving: (1) channel-width variability and scaling relations in the tectonically active Himalaya; (2) landslide characteristics related to large magnitude climatic and tectonic events in Haiti; and (3) identifi cation and quantifi cation of laterally offset geomorphic features within eastern California. In each example, we compare analyses using

VHR Semantic Labeling by Random Forest Classification and Fusion of Spectral and Spatial Features on Google Earth Engine

Semantic labeling is an active field in remote sensing applications. Although handling high detailed objects in Very High Resolution (VHR) optical image and VHR Digital Surface Model (DSM) is a challenging task, it can improve the accuracy of semantic labeling methods. In this paper, a semantic labeling method is proposed by fusion of optical and normalized DSM data. Spectral and spatial featur...

Development of a Google Earth Image's Visual Interpretation Protocol to Determine Plant Ecological Units of the Semi-Steppe Regions

Extended Abstract Background and objectives: Google Earth images are a valuable resource for understanding and studying the natural area's ecology due to their high spatial resolution. Considering that these images have been available for many years, in our country, these valuable data have not been used enough, especially in order to study vegetation and optimal natural areas management. So, ...

Investigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment  between them can lead to one of the systems or both  of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...

Investigation on the Amount of Mortality of Iranian Oak Trees (Quercus brantii Lindi) using Satellite Imagery (Case study: Dashtebarm forests of Fars Province)

In recent years, oak trees in the Zagros forests have suffered a lot of fatalities for unclear reasons. Determining the rate and severity of forest crown density changes is important for the investigation and management of these forests. This research was carried out with the aim of determining the amount of crown cover changes in the forest area of Dashtebarm in Fars province under the influen...

Land Cover Subpixel Change Detection using Hyperspectral Images Based on Spectral Unmixing and Post-processing

The earth is continually being influenced by some actions such as flood, tornado and human artificial activities. This process causes the changes in land cover type. Thus, for optimal management of the use of resources, it is necessary to be aware of these changes. Today’s remote sensing plays key role in geology and environmental monitoring by its high resolution, wide covering and low cost...
